Flat file CMS – the easier option for more speed

Author: admin - Categories: Content Management System - Tags: , , , , ,

Usually astandard CMS (Content Management System) or Blog like Wordpress is in these days database driven, mainly based on MySQL. The development over years has given well-known systems like Joomla, Typo 3 or Wordpress a lot of functions and many nice plug-ins.

Anyhow there are some considerations which make it worthwhile to think about alternative solutions. The first point is installation. Modern programmes have a pretty large amount of code (typically in the range of 10-30 MB) which needs to be transferred to the webspace. In addition you need to set up a database. Technically all this is not a problem, but depending on the speed of the website and database on shared hosts and as well on your personal internet connection it can become a time consuming task.

Also you need to carefully write down the passwords from the database, sometimes very difficult letters and figures, and you need to put them into the setup of the software. This is a one-time problem, so not that important but still(especially if you regularly set up websites) it becomes a boring task But more critical is the regular backup of the database, especially for those making use of an external web space.

Usually you have to take care yourself on backing up all the files, or at least it would be recommended to do, as in case of a crash there is no guarantee that the data is still there. Most webmasters will do the backup procedure correctly in the first month or so. But when time progresses, the less the frequency becomes. After a year or so, in many cases no backups are done anymore.

You may be lucky and the server doesn´t crash or your hosting company has done such a backup. In real life there is actually a big risk loosing data.

But beside these technical points, they are also other reasons to make use  of the flatfile CMS. One thing is speed. A flate file CMS has a lightning speed, even if there is a lot of server load and a heavy use of the database.

One more thing to mention is usability. There are people who want to put everything on the software. But the other option would be to do the most important things in the shortest possible time. Certainly standard CMS are not difficult
pieces of software, but flat file CMS / Blogs like Flatpress or RazorCMS are still much easier to handle. With a flat file CMS you can concentrate on doing the things you want to do, and not wasting time searching through the menus. As open source software they are avaliable free, and additions and themes may be downloaded from freebies sites.

Again, this is not to argue about the value of highly developed software, which definetely have their value. But sometimes you simply need less to become happy.
